SEPTEMBER FREE FIRST SATURDAY FEATURES SOMALI MUSEUM DANCE TROUPE, KINETIC SCULPTURES AND MORE IN THE MINNEAPOLIS SCULPTURE GARDEN

Saturday, September 7

Celebrate the end of summer through movement in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Watch a performance by the Somali Museum Dance Troupe, groove at the Kids’ Dance Party, learn about kinetic sculptures, and participate in a workshop led by professional dancer Kenna-Camara Cottman.

Free First Saturdays feature free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month, plus performances, games, art-making, and kids’ films from 10 am to 3 pm. Family friendly food options are available or bring something from home to snack on in the museum’s public spaces.

SCHEDULE
Performance: Kids’ Dance Party
10 am–2 pm
The Kids’ Dance Party is returning to the Garden! Dance your heart out to beats spun by local DJ Airman Heat.

Workshop: Kenna-Camara Cottman
11 am and 1 pm
Travel through time and space with traditional West African Dance. Shake yourself free with Afro-Caribbean Dance. Jazz it up! Soothe your SOUL! Say it LOUD! Break it down (bust it down), snap it up! WHOA! Come on a journey through the many styles of Black Dance. Mx. Kenna is your guide as you twist and groove. Workshops are approximately 45 min.

Art-Making Activity: Balancing Act
10 am–3 pm
Join artist Zoja Chmielarczyk to learn about 3D composition and kinetic sculpture by making your own mobile, inspired by the work of Alexander Calder.

Art-Making Activity: Kinetic Painting
10 am–3 pm
Create an abstract painting using everyday objects like marbles, toy cars, and bouncy balls.

Performance: Somali Museum Dance Troupe
2 pm
Watch the Somali Museum Dance troupe perform traditional dances from different regions across Somalia.

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden Tour
English, 12 noon
Spanish, 1 pm
Discover a new favorite artwork in the Garden on a participatory tour for kids from a Walker-trained educator. Meet at the main entrance to the Walker Art Center.
