Clay, tea, and books—what do these objects have in common? They all inspire the Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates. Explore his new exhibition, make art with Northern Clay Center, and join us for story time.

Free First Saturdays feature free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month, plus performances, games, art-making, and kids’ films from 10 am to 3 pm. Family friendly food options are available or bring something from home to snack on in the museum’s public spaces.

Join Auntie Beverly in Theaster Gates: Assembly Hall to hear fables and stories from the African diaspora.

Beverly Cottman is an interdisciplinary artist creating at the intersections of visual, literary, and performance art. As storyteller Auntie Beverly, she tells folktales and fables from the African diaspora. She has performed in collective and collaborative productions at Pangea World Theater, Hopkins Center for the Arts, and the Avalon Theatre. She is a teaching artist with COMPAS and a participant in the Givens Foundation for African American Literature’s initiative Spirited Minds and Strong Souls Singing, which brings African American literary artists into classrooms.

Art-Making Workshop: Northern Clay Center
10 am–2:30 pm; workshops begin on the half hour

Do you have a favorite cup, bowl, mug, or container that you like to use? When do you use it? Theaster Gates thinks that objects like teacups and plates can bring people together by sharing food, drink, and conversation. Visit the Art Lab to make your own vessel out of clay with artists from Northern Clay Center!

Workshops will last roughly 30 minutes. Though they are drop-in, you may have to wait a bit until the facilitator is ready for a new group. Northern Clay Center will keep and fire all finished objects. Don’t forget to come back to Free First Saturday on November 2 to pick up your fired creation!

Northern Clay Center advances the ceramic arts for artists, learners, and the community through education, exhibitions, and artist services. Ongoing programs include exhibitions of historical and architectural ceramics as well as the work of contemporary regional, national, and international ceramic artist; classes and workshops for children and adults at all skill levels; studio space and grants for artists; and a sales gallery representing many top ceramic artists from the region and elsewhere.
